Lamentation over the Dead Christ

0.00

Lamentation over the Dead Christ, oil on linen canvas 60"x72", Langley signature in lower right corner of painting inset.

The sorrowful mother gazes upon her dead son whose body in laid upon a stone slab.

A decorative trompe l'oeil frame surround illustrates the parable of the Vine with an acanthus rinceau stemming from a tabernacle below and terminating above in a pair of classical winged genii supporting a cameo portrait of the Cure d'Ars: St. Jean-Marie-Baptiste Vianney the patron saint of parish priests.

The vertical and horizontal axis of the painting pull the eye to the pierced side of Jesus. This theme is echoed in the inscription attributed to Jean Vianney; "Le sacerdoce, c’est l’amour du cœur de Jésus".
